The first reaction is physical.
A deep breath.
The kind that comes instinctively in front of an open landscape, in the presence of something alive, something that clears the lungs and, at the same time, something less tangible. The chest opens, the rhythm slows, perception sharpens.
Luisella Traversi Guerra’s work begins there.
It does not ask to be read. It asks to be inhaled.
Her painting does not construct images. It allows them to surface. It does not describe the world, but enters it, dissolving the distance between observer and phenomenon. What appears on the canvas is never fixed: it is a field in motion, where colour, matter and gesture remain in a state of continuous transformation.
Nature, here, is not subject. It is a condition.
Flowers, branches, blooming fields are not depicted as such. They expand, dissolve, reconfigure, until they become something else: a vibration, a density, a rhythm. The visible is only the first layer. What unfolds goes beyond recognition.
The exhibition is structured through four rooms at Luisa Catucci Contemporary, each corresponding to a season. Not as representation, but as experience. Each room is further activated through the presence of essential oils and ikebana compositions created by the artist herself, extending the work into a sensory field and reinforcing its dialogue with the cycles of the seasons.
Spring is the intake of breath. A moment of opening. Forms are still uncertain, emerging, suspended between appearance and disappearance. Everything feels possible, not yet defined.
Summer is the full breath. Expansion, saturation, immersion. The pictorial space becomes dense, almost overwhelming. Colour intensifies, matter accumulates, the body is drawn in. There is no distance left.
Autumn is the slowing of breath. A return inward. Layers settle, tones deepen, gestures become more deliberate. What remains is not less, but more concentrated. The work begins to slower time.
Winter is the held breath. A moment of suspension. The image becomes essential, stripped, yet charged. Silence appears, but it is not empty. It is precise. It is silence.
Across these passages, the work is sustained by a quiet, persistent discipline. Not visible as control, but as dedication. A repeated return to the same inner necessity, approached each time from a different angle, until something begins to resonate with clarity.
Over time, the painting has moved away from the need to define form. What remains is matter as language. Pigment thickens or dissolves, surfaces open or close, colour becomes rhythm rather than description.
The viewer does not stand outside this process. The work does not offer itself as an object, but as an environment. It requires time, attention, presence. It shifts, depending on how it is approached.
What emerges is not an image, but a state.
A state in which breathing and seeing begin to align. Where perception is not only visual, but bodily. Where painting becomes something that is not only looked at, but experienced.
Zwischen Atemzügen – il mio canto libero is not an exhibition about the seasons.
It is an exhibition about cycles of expansion and return, about the movement between opening and holding, between immersion and clarity.
About that moment between one breath and the next, where something inside and outside briefly becomes the same.
