52 linocuts by Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914–1973) were recently discovered in the basement of his borther’s house in Silkeborg, Denmark. Nobody knew that they had been preserved. Most of the linocuts were unknown and only a few had been reproduced before. Jorn’s family entrusted Museum Jorn in Silkeborg with the plates who in turn approached Niels Borch Jensen and his master printers to investigate their quality and in the end to print them.
The linocuts Jorn made between 1933 and 1939 give a rare insight into the development of the young artist. Jorn is taking the aesthetic simplification typical for the medium of linocut to the extreme, creating highly condensed black-and-white images full of contrast and dramatic effects.
