Thema: "It is mostly at night that the highest fear of crime occurs. Although all of the senses provide information about the environment, it is through vision that the majority of information is acquired and processed by the brain. Vision, therefore, has a tremendous impact on the decision making process." (from the Guideline on Security Lighting for People, Property, and Public Spaces, 2003) As a part of Transmediale Vorspiel, visual artist Alona Rodeh will present a new time-based piece, embedded in the architecture of Vesselroom project space. In the last 2.5 years, under the meta-title "Safe and Sound", Rodeh has been following the visual and sonar expressions of safety in the city. In the case of this show, the emphasize is on the presence of light and it's physical effect on one's eyesight and body. Temporary lights and lit photographs will together perform a chase of lights, a silent performance of rhythm. Alona Rodeh (1979) is a visual artist based in Tel Aviv and Berlin. Rodeh’s works react to cultural phenomena by engaging and appropriating their visual and concrete manifestations, rooted in the daily practice of the public sphere. Her large-scale works have been exhibited at venues including among others Tel Aviv Museum, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, CCA Tel Aviv, Plug In ICA in Winnipeg, Canada. She has held performances at Zacheta National Gallery in Warsaw, at the Swiss Pavilion at the Venice Biennial, Israel Museum and others. Recently Rodeh exhibited a solo show at Grimmuseum in Berlin. In this year's Transmediale Festival, Rodeh will present a lecture-performance on the history of siren devices, mapping the parallel evolution of sirens in civil defense and music from the early 19th century until today, with an emphasis on Israel’s history of alarms. Her talk will include demonstrations of siren sounds in what will eventually become a musical composition carried out by Tel Aviv musician Mule Driver. Künstler: Dominik Steiner
Thema: As unique collaboration with Berlin-based gallery Cruise&Callas*, Vesselroom Project presents a selection of his finest collages made between 2013 till today 2015 will be displayed. Jauser-Baby is a playground for imagination. An invitation to enter the familiar and yet the unknown. In his collages, Steiner adds cut-outs from comic books, stickers and other pictorial material from a child´s world and trash culture in order to form new sceneries. Unsweetened combinations create unexpected narratives where the focus is on the process of making and becoming. The ease and speed of Steiner´s work is visible as a hybrid, as is a witty element. Collages serve as starting point where the artist takes inspiration from or they may disclose the premonitory idea behind a work not yet come into life. With the selection chosen for Vesselroom Project Steiner attempts to temporarily isolate this specific medium by highlighting its freedom in terms of creation. At the same time, the relation between line and surface is revealed which in turn is essential to his painting. *Splendor-Du Lauser Cruise & Callas until 31st of October 2015

Thema: 'Structure of its Theme' is a study of the facade of the iconic Neue Kreuzberger Zentrum (NKZ) building in Kottbusser Tor, in order to convert its antennas into musical notes from which their score lines constitute the structure of the building. The reason for the large number of antennas at the Neue Kreuzberger Zentrum is connected to the origin of the building. Designed by Wolfgang Jokisch and John Uhl, it was built between 1969 and 1974 within the first program of urban renewal in West Berlin. It was negatively received and completely rejected by the local residents as it meant the demolition of much of the surrounding area’s buildings that had predated and survived the war. Moreover, the new building was designed to shelter a highway that would cross the neighborhood; hence its characteristic shape. NKZ was intended to accommodate the mass of immigrants that arrived as «guest workers» in the 60s and 70s due to the economic boom in West Germany, mainly Turkish people in the case of Berlin. «I’m interested in the antennas as a connection tool to their culture of origin; like enormous ears or belly buttons which connect to a distant motherland. They become architectural elements, as the inhabitants of the building modify and personalize its appearance through an unintentional act of mere functionality. I am interested in the poetic act of encoding through music the physical facts, in this case obtaining a soundtrack which is defined by the tenants themselves, so fragile and connected to them, and exposed to be easily altered as soon as they have to change home.» Rubén González Escudero *Madrid, Spain. Lives and works in Berlin Rubén González Escudero was born in Madrid in 1979, graduated in Visual Arts by the Complutense University of Madrid in 2007. Since then he lives in Berlin and has performed screenings of his videoworks in GlogauAIR (Berlin) and Loop (Barcelona) and exhibited in different places like Casal Solleric in Palma de Mallorca, Galería Kreisler in Madrid, Alte Kindl Brauerei, Tachelles o Werkstatt der Culturen in Berlin. Since 2009, he is part of the artistic collective Dreiecke with Elena García Jiménez and Marina Escorial. His work comes from a particular view of the world and its context, that he sees as an affecting cultural construction of our perception. His interest lies primarily in the subject and his environment, which he considers not only on a physical level, but also in its broader meaning. In his artistic process, he begins with the observation and exploration of his surroundings, to later analyze them by photos, paintings, drawings or video. This is followed by the deconstruction, contextualization, alienation and abstraction of the results. Ultimately, reality is reconstructed in a new order again, gathered up or associated in an alternative way. The result of this process brings up the question of how unconditional conventions affect our reality. FÊTE DE LA MUSIQUE On the occasion of the worldwide - celebrated festival Fête de la musique on the 21st of June 2015 at 12 a.m., Vesselroom Project is pleased to announce a series of five musical performances that will take place in frame of the solo show ‘Structure of its theme’ by Rubén González Escudero. He will be interpreting the music score done by our invited artist Rubén González Escudero based on the antennas of the building where Vesselroom is located. Michael Thomas (DE) theflyingyourtes.com Starting to learn the cello at very early stage, Michael has always been curious about a wide range of musical genres, including jazz, classical and world music. After he discovered electronic music in his early twenties, he became passionate in particular about Berlin Techno scene. Inspired by its hypnotic effects, he began to experiment with electronic sounds himself and exploring the diversity of synthetic sounds in order to capture the musical ideas that have been floating in his mind. Together with drummer Richard, he founded the electro acoustic live project “Flying Yourtes” in 2013. Recently, he has been focusingmore on his own work, while also collaborating with various other electronic musicians. Michael will be also offering his own interpretation of the music score of the exhibition ‘Structure of its Theme’. This project pretends to be open to all, so every performance can be different and involve spontaneous work with another artists. Dizzy Moon (FR) dizzymoon.bandcamp.com One cello and one voice. Dizzy Moon is a singular project that proposes an extremely sensitive combination, where the richness of the cello sounds mingle with Maryse’s limpid and ethereal voice and bring flashing and stealthy lyrics. With songs mostly in English (sometimes in French) one lets oneself get carried away by the smooth and airy unity with folk and indie pop influences. Alessandro Biscetti (IT) www.soundcloud.com/noi-duo Alessandro Biscetti is an Italian guitarrist who normally plays in the bossa nova formation Noi Duo. On the Fëte de la Musique day at Vesselroom he will be presenting a little soloist program between classical and South American folk songs.

Künstler: Hanako Geierhos, Florian Schmidt
Thema: Using their individual artistic practices – performative sculpture and sculptural painting - Hanako Geierhos and Florian Schmidt collaborate this time together on a unique and significant show, connected by an acute interest in alternative constructions of space and the infinite possibilities of forms that can emerge from them. Atopic Narratives is their first duo-show in Vesselroom Project. Their exhibited works open up questions about the status of public, private and social space (Geierhos) and the meaning of objects and paintings (Schmidt) in an atopic society. Their common aim is to exceed boundaries through an ambiguous outline of their individual works with the further intention of unveiling the space that lays beyond the absoluteness of predominant perception. Four different and at once synchronized bodies of work will be included in the exhibition space: Vela, Transitory Rituals (H.Geierhos) and Structure, Community (F.Schmidt). List of works: Vela = a potential shared space Structure = a potential divided space Community = a limited space of endless possibilities Transitory Rituals = a social space of open possibilities --------------- Hanako Geierhos (born in Hamburg, Germany) Lives and works in Berlin Hanako Geierhos explores art as an instrument of communication and a platform for articulation of sensory experience, different forms of social interaction and individual/collective perception of space. “At its most fundamental, it may be said that a ritual is the series of gestures that defines the communion between two distinct spaces. Historically, this has largely come to evoke the phenomenal’s brush against the noumenal, but, from a more agnostic stance, it can also describe the encounter between two physicalities, two discrete geographies. Something of this provides the point of departure for Hanako Geierhos’ poetic interventions. Her multifaceted objects in their various incarnations—from reassembled floor-pieces (Vela) to modular bundles deployed into public space (Transitory Rituals) —offer themselves as the catalysts for so many minute interactions. “ – Franklin Melendez (2013) Florian Schmidt (born in Raabs an der Thaya, Austria) Lives and works in Berlin Florian Schmidt creates pictorial frames through which he is exploring the relation of space, material and color. This research results in two-dimensional works for the wall and freestanding sculptures. “In works like ‘The Community’ series (2010 - ongoing), the focus is not on the representation level itself but rather on the act of bringing together found materials in a visual context. Existing materials such as pieces of cardboard, fragments of canvas and wood in certain colors and shapes are joined to create compositions that are predetermined by the picture’s supporting structures: once again, it is the frame, as the image carrier, that determines the organization of the individual fields of color and picture fragments, thus contributing to the transformation of the material into a painterly image.” – Stephanie Damianitsch (2013) In addition to their individual art practice Geierhos and Schmidt collaborated since 2006 together in various group-exhibitions at Gallery 400, University of Illinois at Chicago (2013), Autocenter, Berlin (2009), Body Navigation Festival, St. Petersburg (2008) and Real Presence, Belgrade (2006). //////// Exhibition Opening 2nd of May 2015 7 p.m Artist Talk 21st of May 2015 7 p.m Finissage 30th of May 2015 7 p.m Exhibition time 2nd - 30th of May 2015 --------------- Opening hours* Thursday – Saturday 3 p.m – 7 p.m *during Gallery Weekend Saturday 7 p.m – open end Sunday 11 a.m – 6 p.m
